Conferli, #MEET4IMPACT, and GDS-Movement are partnering to investigate how subventions can drive sustainability and positive societal impact in the global events industry.
This research builds on previous studies into subvention practices and examines how destinations and associations can optimise funding strategies to align with sustainability goals. By identifying best practices, key challenges, and innovative approaches, the study aims to provide practical recommendations for destinations, convention bureaus, and policymakers.
As part of this effort, industry stakeholders gathered during Impact Day, just before the GDS-Forum on 14 October 2024, to share insights and refine the research direction. The project now moves forward with in-depth surveys, interviews, and case studies to assess how subventions influence sustainability and impact initiatives.
Guy Bigwood, CEO of GDS-Movement, highlights the importance of this research:
“The global events industry is shifting towards sustainability and impact, and subventions must evolve to support this transition. This research will equip destinations and associations with the strategies they need to ensure funding mechanisms drive real and lasting societal and environmental benefits.”
The White Paper stemming from this research will be launched at the end of 2025 and will provide valuable insights to help the industry harness subventions as a tool for positive change.
